The Hot Springs Village Property Owners’Association architectural control committee approved three new home permits at last Thursday’s meeting.

This brings the number of new home permits for the year to six. Vantage Construction will build a 1,637-square-foot home at 23 Pedrera Lane.

Last June Dr. Walter “Bubba” Smith, senior pastor at Christ of the Hills United Methodist Church, left for a six month tour in Iraq. As a chaplain-colonel in the United States Air Force Reserve, Smith’s rank was needed, so he decided to accept the assignment.

After nine months serving as the Hot Springs Village Good Samaritan Society’s interim administrator, Ruth Leitel turned the symbolic keys over to new administrator Layne Gross.

Gross has had years of administrative experience.

He comes to the Village campus following 14 years as the administrator of the Good Samaritan Society’s facility in Indianola, Iowa.

On my submission last week I recorded the employee bonus figure of last year as $1,725,280. That figure is actually $175,250. The figure I listed for this year’s bonus of $1,064,280 is correct.

Richard “ Dick” Boaz passed peacefully into Eternal life on Jan. 12, 2011.

A long-time Village resident, Dick had recently moved to Colorado to be closer to his family.

Dick was born to Richard and Eula Baker Boaz on May 18, 1926 in Memphis, Tenn. He grew up in Little Rock. He served in the Navy during WW II.

Long-time Hot Springs Village resident Richard “Dick” McKinney, 93, died in Colorado Springs on Jan. 16 of renal failure and pneumonia after a short illness.

He was a loving and generous man but most of all he was a great husband, father and humanitarian. As a WWII veteran serving in the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific, he earned a Purple Heart and two Air Medals.

William F. “Bill” Doran, 70, resident of Hot Springs Village, Ark., passed away Jan. 17, 2012.

Mr. Doran was born July 28, 1941, in Teaneck, N.J., the son of Helen and Michael. He spent his formative years in Milwaukee, Wis. and graduated from Marquette University with a degree in engineering.

Walter M. Kierstyn Sr., 82, of Hot Springs Village, passed away Jan. 13, 2012. He was born July 22, 1929 in Racine, Wis. to Mike and Stella Kierstyn.

Walter was a U.S. Army veteran and retired after 39 years of service with Wisconsin Natural Gas and Electric. He was a member of Community of Joy Lutheran Church.

Joe Fisher Roop, 91, of Hot Springs Village, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012 in Hot Springs.

He was born Feb. 6, 1920 in Paint Lick, Ky. to Waller Bennett and Lucy Noe Roop. Joe attended Eastern Kentucky University and served with the U.S. Air Force as a pilot in WWII. He worked for Continental Insurance Co., retiring as vice president of the farm and hail division.

He resided in Hot Springs Village, Ark. with his wife Marilyn of 32 years at the time of his death. Dick was born Jan. 1, 1939 in Chippewa Falls, Wis., where he graduated from high school.
